I am tired all the time and am considering doing some testing to find out what's going on. What are the treatment options if a test comes back indicating that I have adrenal exhaustion?
Dr. Kalish: Assuming you do have some level of adrenal exhaustion, there are several treatment options. In the case of imbalances in adrenal hormones I design supplement and lifestyle programs to reestablish normal cortisol and DHEA output. These programs include vitamins, minerals, some herbs and in some cases DHEA and Pregnenolone, two important hormones that help regulate many of our body functions. The programs vary widely because some people need their cortisol levels to be reduced while others need an increase in cortisol and DHEA. So, a product that boosts cortisol production can be of great benefit to one person, and push another person in the exact opposite direction they need to go in order to restore the normal stress hormone levels.
In some cases there is more going on beneath the surface and a person needs to investigate deeper as to why they have adrenal exhaustion. In some cases it is diet related, emotional stress related or quite commonly related to digestive problems. If there are significant underlying sources of stress still going on in a person's emotional life, work life or internally in the body on a physiological level, then we also need to directly address the source of the stress with lifestyle modifications. This would include addressing sleep patterns, what and when a person eats, alcohol use, etc. In some cases if there are significant internal organ stresses present causing the adrenal stress then more investigation is required.
Most people go through a three month program based on the initial results of the Functional Adrenal Stress Profile. If their problems are not sufficiently resolved we can look deeper into the underlying stresses. If what generated your stress is now resolved (i.e. just graduated from law school or just getting over a death in the family) then the simple adrenal programs are sufficient to restore balance.
